GPS tracking tips for when you’re not driving your car

As we approach the end of the first week of New Zealand’s Covid-19 Level 4 stay at home period many of you will have not used your vehicles and will possibly not use your vehicles over the coming weeks. We thought it might be a good idea to share some GPS tracking tips for this time.

If your vehicle is equipped with AVS GPS Tracking and you have not driven your vehicle then the GPS tracking server will have not received a recent GPS location fix. The system will automatically send you a notification that your trackers/s are offline after 7 days. This is nothing to be alarmed about, it is just letting you know a recent GPS location has not been recorded.

If you are worried about your GPS tracker over this time you can make sure the tracker is operational by starting the car. If the vehicle is in a garage try and move it outside so the tracker can get a clear line of site to the sky. Then after a few minutes log into your account and make sure it has updated the time and date to the current time and date, and that the ignition is showing as on. In some cases this can take several minutes and does rely on the tracker being able to get a clear GPS fix.

Also do remember that a GPS tracker (along with any other security device like a car alarm) requires power to operate so if your car battery goes flat the tracker is not going to work. Most vehicle tracker models have their own back up battery but this is usually only enough for a few days on standby. Read our AVS Car Security website post about looking after your vehicle battery and car alarm for more information.

If you require your tracker for insurance purposes we recommend getting in touch with your insurance company if you cannot keep the vehicle battery in working order to discuss your options over this time.

Please do also take extra precautions for safe storage of your car during this time, particularly if you are not able to keep the car battery in working order.

You can contact us via the website or email (sales@avscarsecurity.com) during the stay at home period and will do our best to assist where we can.

Stay safe and look after those around you.
